Horsefeathers: June 2024

Lisa Everett, Equestrian Manager • June 19, 2024

Projects work continues in both of our facilities.

Our Equestrian Team continues to be focused on making improvements to Casey Tibbs Western Center (CTWC) and the International Equestrian Center (IEC).

CTWC Arena 1

Erosion that occurred at the end of the CTWC Arena 1 arena due to heavy rains earlier this year was repaired. The area was backfilled with decomposed granite (DG) and washed concrete sand was added on top, followed by grooming of the arena. This allows the entire arena to be used again.

Hay Storage Sheds

Installation of 28 hay storage sheds at the International Equestrian Center was completed. The boarders are moving into the new sheds, and our Equestrian Team is planning to help boarders during our Hay Shed Moving Day on Friday, June 28.

In addition, Dumpster Days are planned in both facilities Friday through Sunday, June 28 – 30. Boarders can discard items no longer needed on site.

IEC Patience Poles Footing Repairs

Repairs were made to the footing of the patience poles at the IEC. The patience poles provide a safe place for horses to stand and learn patience and how to be tied.

Mucking Tools for Manure Boxes

New mucking tools used to maintain and clean the recently refurbished manure boxes were added to boxes at the IEC, as well as one box at the Casey Tibbs corrals. We will continue to add tools over the summer to the remaining boxes.

Upcoming Projects in the Planning Stage

  • IEC Barn C Renovation: The project includes the renovation of all walls and the addition of five in-and-out corrals. Renovation is essential to ensure Barn C is safe for horses to board again.
  • CTWC Arena 2 footing repairs: Repairs are planned for the base to eliminate waves, and new washed concrete sand footing was brought in to increase drainage and provide a better, safer riding and turnout area for the horses.
  • Asphalt repairs at both facilities: Safety repairs will be made to holes that have developed in the asphalt in the barns at both facilities.
  • Corral renovation at CTWC: The project will remove the corral panels and renovate the footing to allow for proper drainage during the rainy season, and an overall safer and healthier place for the horses to live.
