Twilight Golf: Last Game Before Dusk

Tiffany Pressler • August 7, 2024

Rain didn’t stop 72 golfers from participating in Twilight Golf on Thursday, August 1.

Twilight Golf is a round of golf played in the late afternoon or evening, with the goal of playing as many holes as possible before it gets dark. It can be a good option for golfers who have an open afternoon schedule or want to finish a round before the end of the day. It’s also great for those who work during the day and want to fit in a round before the sun goes down.

This style of golf has gained popularity with its reduced rates, cooler temperatures and scenic beauty. The timing makes it less crowded and provides a more laid-back, social environment, perfect for unwinding with friends or family after a day’s work.

Matt Brumbaugh, PGA and head golf professional, says Twilight Golf is a fun recreational option for golfers. They play fun games, and it’s enjoyable for everybody. It’s a non-traditional league, and he likes to keep it low-stress. “I have two rules,” says Brumbaugh. “Keep it fun and casual.” He adds that it’s a great way for husbands and wives, as well as teens and neighbors, to play together. Many who participate in Twilight Golf are couples or families who don't typically golf. According to Brumbaugh, golf can be intimidating, but Twilight Golf is the opposite; it's enjoyable for the family.

Tim Smith, golf shop assistant, has been playing the game for over 20 years. He teaches junior and adult golf and helps run golf tournaments. He says they are building the game, and it's fun for residents to come out and play. It’s less competitive and a great way to join in the community and use the amenities.

Matt, Tim, and Darryl Ness, golf shop assistant, were at the event to ensure the registration process was efficiently managed, and players walked to the nearby Snack Bar for their complementary drink.

According to Smith, one of the fun activities they play during Twilight Golf is “Beat the Pro.” The goal is for the Twilight Golfers to beat the professionals, including Tim Smith, Cody Snyder and Darrell Neff. The object is for the winner to hit the ball closest to the hole on the outing green.

“It’s a great way to get on the course, and the cost is good,” says golfer Robin Brainard. This was her second time playing Twilight Golf. She adds it’s a lot of fun, and the weather is good.

Married couple Blane and Kelsey Clements are the San Vicente Golf Club members. This was their second-ever Twilight Golf event, but they play two to three times a week. Kelsey has been playing the game for one year, while her husband has played for 25 years. Blane enjoys the sport and looks forward to the free drink given to each golfer during the event. “It’s fun, and it keeps golf interesting,” says Kelsey. She said that last week, there was a scramble where they got to throw the golf ball into the game, and it didn't count as a stroke.

The couple play Twilight golf with their best friends, Sam and Amy Sailors, who have been golfing for a little over a year. Amy says it’s low stakes and a great way to get introduced to golf. Sam says that he likes the social aspect and never knows what to expect, which keeps it interesting. He says Twilight Golf is less pressure, the staff is amazing and, like his friend, he enjoys the free drink. Both Sam and Amy work remotely, so they have the freedom to play Twilight Golf and take advantage of what San Diego Country Estates has to offer.

Another golfer, Allen Wheeler, has been golfing for six months. He says he started playing because he is married to Tim Smith’s niece, and Smith got him involved in the game. He is new to playing golf and says it’s a lot of fun.

Twilight Golf is held every Thursday from 5 to 7:30 pm through August 29. Check-in is at 4:30 pm. It’s a 9-hole round and includes a cart, prizes and a beverage of your choice. There are fun formats chosen by the Matt weekly. Cost is $15 for members and $25 for guests. Players can sign up in the Golf Shop or by calling 760-789-3477.

See you on the course!
