San Vicente Golf Course saw the summer’s highest number of Twilight Golfers on Thursday, August 29, with 90 players participating in the last twilight round of the season.
Twilight Golf started in June and continued all summer. It was held every Thursday from 5 to 7:30 pm so all could experience the beautiful Ramona sunsets. The 9-hole round included a cart, prizes, and a beverage of your choice.
The golf course provided hot dogs and drinks to players at their season-end celebration. There were $2,000 worth of prizes, including a $100 gift card to the golf shop for the player who got closest to the pin on holes #2 and #12, a golf bag, a GPS watch, golf putters, a Sky Caddie, and a Puma Speaker.
Married couple Tim and Nancy Martin enjoy playing at San Vicente Resort’s Twilight Golf. Nancy started golfing two years ago and loves it. “It’s fun,” says Nancy. “They make up different games for us to play.” She added that there were prizes for the winners of those games. Her husband, Tim, has been golfing for about 30 years. Tim plays golf at Coronado or Fairbanks Ranch. He added that Twilight golf is a good opportunity for beginners to play in a group environment. It’s not as serious and is good for players to get out for fun.
Father and son duo Walter and Hunter Pietila are happy to get on the course together. “My son got me started and got me to play,” says Walter. Walter played golf as a kid and tries to play more now that he is retired, and his son took a liking to it. He added that Twilight golf time is slightly cooler than daytime golf rounds. Hunter, age 21, has been golfing since age 4. He plays golf all around San Diego, but the San Vicente Golf Resort is his home course. He plays here two to three times a week. “I heard how much fun it was, and it was a good opportunity to get out and play,” Hunter says about Twilight Golf. “They have done a good job at it; it’s very cool.”
Local golfer Greg Marquez, who played this game solo, lives at the house near hole number two. He moved to Ramona two years ago from Point Loma and has been golfing for eight years. The last Twilight Golf of the season was his first Twilight game. “The weather is nice, and it’s not as hot,” says Marquez. He says he has played a lot of golf courses, and this is a tough one. It’s bigger and longer than most courses and not overcrowded. He likes that he doesn’t feel rushed by other players, and it’s more peaceful. He mentions that when he plays in Bonita, balls are coming in from different directions, and it’s a lot harder to play.
Paulina Wasco and her two children, Karen, 6, and Jaxon, 8, have been golfing for two years. She likes that they can come in the afternoon, and it’s a relaxed environment. “It’s fun, and there is always a little tweak,” says Paulina. She says it’s also less competitive. Her kids love the raffle and the prizes. Jaxon says his favorite part of Twilight Golf was when he got to throw the ball in during the game and when he won three red balls at the raffle.
Matt Brumbaugh, PGA and head golf professional, facilitates checking the golfers in and getting them on their way to the course. He says Twilight Golf is a good option for golfers because it's people on the course having a good time in a casual atmosphere. He likes to see families coming out to golf together. Brumbaugh says they will start Twilight Golf back up in June 2025 through the end of August on Thursdays at 5 pm.
What’s next for San Vicente Golf Resort? Wednesday, September 4, was the Parent-Junior Tournament. Parents teamed up with their kids aged 6-13 to play a 9-hole round. Coming up on Friday, October 25, they will be hosting the 3rd Annual Superintendent Revenge. They will set up the most difficult golf course with the hardest pins, and the greens will be fast and firm. “We only do this once a year,” says Brumbaugh.
