Horsefeathers: August 2024

Lisa Everett, Equestrian Manager • August 30, 2024

Maintaining and improving our equestrian facilities is a priority for the Equestrian team. We are focusing on renovating patience poles and water features, performing necessary maintenance, completing footing repairs, and strategically planning future projects while also promoting the facilities at local events, like the Ramona Rodeo, and updating informational materials.

Project Updates

IEC Patience Poles: Both patience poles at IEC were renovated earlier this week. DG – decomposed granite – was placed to level the ground, which was then compacted, and we secured mats on top at the end. Patience poles are a training tool used to train horses to stand quietly and patiently while tied.

Facility Maintenance: The team is working hard to complete the necessary maintenance throughout both facilities, including small repairs to manure boxes, waterers, round pen walls, weeding, etc.

IEC Water Feature: The IEC infield water feature has begun renovations; the footing and water feature is no longer ideal for use. The old footing and broken liner were removed. We will be adding DG to the base, replacing the liner, and adding new footing on top for riding. The project is expected to be completed next month.

Casey Tibbs Arena 2: Footing repair to Casey Tibbs Arena 2 was completed this week. The project included removing the panels, then ripping, laser leveling, and recompacting the existing base. Once the base was prepared, 2.5 feet of washed concrete sand was placed on top.

The Equestrian Committee has recommended pausing the corral footing projects at both facilities and the corral hay sheds at the IEC as they discuss a strategic plan for the equestrian facilities. Corral hay sheds will continue to be approved as needed on a case-by-case basis. If you need a shed, please contact management.

We were thrilled about the Ramona Rodeo in R-Town last weekend! The Equestrian Team placed a banner at the rodeo to share our facilities and services with equestrians, and we attended the rodeo Saturday night to cheer on our hard-working employee Colton Snyder as he rode a rodeo bull.
