Learn from an expert how you can protect your home against wildfire damage.

David Sibbet, Fire Services Coordinator for the San Diego County Fire Protection District, will be speaking about Defensible Space and Home Hardening. David leads the Community Risk Reduction Division, which includes inspections, plan reviews, and various other programs to keep our community safe. They also work with our Cal Fire partners on defensible space, fuel breaks, and roadside clearing projects.

Defensible space is the area around a structure that is intentionally managed and designed to reduce the risk of wildfire damage. Creating defensible space is crucial for protecting homes and buildings from the spread of wildfires. One hundred feet of defensible space is required by the Public Resources Code (PRC) 4291.

Home hardening for fire is a proactive measure that involves making structural modifications and using fire-resistant materials to reduce a home's vulnerability to wildfire. The goal is to increase the chances of a home surviving a wildfire event by minimizing its susceptibility to ignition and reducing the spread of fire if it does occur. Some key aspects of home hardening for fire include: roofing, chimneys, vents, exterior walls, windows and doors, decks, and more.
