Bulldog Pride on the Fairway: RHS Golf Hosts Annual Bulldog Open

Ramona High School’s boys’ golf team, boasting a strong 7-1 season record, hosted the Bulldog Open at San Vicente Resort with almost 100 players and 16 teams, demonstrating growing success under dedicated coaching and community support.

Ramona High School’s boys’ golf team is making waves on the fairway this season, building off a strong record and hosting the much-anticipated Bulldog Open last Monday, March 17, at San Vicente Resort.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Craig Powell and Assistant Coach George Cobian, the Bulldogs have carved out a reputation for competitive excellence within the CIF San Diego Section’s Valley League. With strong rivalries, the RHS Bulldog team is gearing up for a standout season that’s already showing promise with a 7-1 record.

The Bulldog Open, a CIF Sanctioned event, kicked off with a 1 pm shotgun start and welcomed 16 high school teams, including top programs from San Diego County, Murietta, and Temecula. Each school had a six-player team, with five scores counting toward the team total—allowing one low score to be dropped. Five coaches, including Powell, participated in course review, and Cobian served as the Hole 6 Marshall. In total, over 100 golfers were on the course.

“We’ve seen a real turnaround in the last few years,” said Coach Powell. “Thanks to the support of Golf Pro Matt Brumbaugh and the San Vicente Golf Team dedicated to a junior program, our record has improved from 7-8 in 2023 to 13-3 last year. Each year, some good RHS players elect to compete for other San Diego schools, and we have trained and committed new players feeding into our program now.”

The Bulldogs are also eyeing the CIF Championship, scheduled for May 19–21, 2025, with rounds at Steele Canyon and the iconic Torrey Pines South Course. To prepare, RHS golfers are focused on their 9-hole league matches and practice and back-to-back 18-hole rounds—a test of both physical stamina and mental focus, which Coach Powell emphasizes is “90% of the game.”

The Coaches League Tournament Play in the CIF San Diego Section is an informal but fun tradition during the League Championship Tournament. The coaches choose a score and can only win if they score under their chosen score, a lighthearted way for coaches to stay engaged and enjoy a bit of friendly competition themselves.

Thanks to Coach Powell for his passion for the game, and his strong partnership with the San Vicente Golf Team. He brings players and coaches to the course, and the course experience feedback is positive.

With strong leadership, rising talent, and supportive community partners, Ramona High’s golf program continues to grow.

Stay tuned for more updates as we follow the team to the CIF Championship.
